Arakawa-ku

photo montages and video
2012 - 2013

Arakawa-ku is the name of a district in Tokyo, an area, where Claudia Larcher was working and living for six month. Many of those little single-family dwellings which – built on narrowest space and tiny properties – line up in strange architectural forms, with only few centimetres of interspace. In the photo series of the same name Claudia Larcher isolates single buildings and exposes thus their forms, which appear mostly weird to our eyes. The connecting formal element in this set of photographs of different formats is only the horizontal line which allows an anchorage of the gaze instead of a horizon.
